Gourgen Shakaryan
1950 - 1970s
For many years Gurgen Shakaryan has worked in the Soviet-Armenian press as a specialist of theatre photography. He had collaborated with the editorial teams of Sovetakan Hayastan (Soviet Armenia) and Taterakan Yerevan (Theatrical Yerevan) magazines and was also published in numerous local newspapers. As is evident from his reproduced photographs, Shakaryan started using colour film in the 1950s, effectively becoming one of the first practitioners in Soviet-Armenian documentary photography to use this medium. Shakaryan's portraits of stage artists are especially successful in their expressive restraint. We have been unable to find any details about the photographer’s biography in published sources.
