V. G. Sahakov (Sahakyan)
1900 - 1910s
The photographer’s biographical details are as yet unknown. While there is only a single known photograph bearing his name – currently in the collection of Lusadaran Armenian Photography Foundation - it gives some idea about the developed professional skills and notable talent of the author. Shot outdoors, in natural conditions, this portraits demonstrates the obvious influence of the international ‘art nouveau’ style, which was widely incorporated in all aspects of Tiflis’ architecture and visual culture prior to WWI. As such, the photograph also points to the photographer's aspiration for artistic and painterly associations. Thanks to its elegant compositional and lighting solutions, this portrait acquires graphical and almost decorative qualities that imbue its subject with poetic feeling.
