Mardiros N. Mosditchian
1890 - 1900s
Biographical details about this photographer have not been located. As we learn from the photographs bearing his studio seal, Mosditchian was based in Cilicia’s Mersin city – one of the most important sea ports in the region. What these few cabinet portraits indicate is that the photographer had a relatively large and well-furnished pavilion, where he primarily made portraits for family albums and business purposes. Although these images do not shine with their aesthetic features, they clearly reflect the high standards of cultural and social life in Mersin and, in particular, the overall prosperity and Eurocentric character of the city’s large Armenian community prior to the 1915 Genocide.
