Raphael Khendamian
1890 - 1910s
According to photography historian Bahattin Öztunçay, Khendamian self-named studio was opened in 1892 in the Kadıköy district of Constantinople. It was one of the most cosmopolitan regions in the city, where until the 1920s the prevailing part of the population was made up of Greeks, Armenians and European emigres and Khendamian’s clients were mostly representatives of these nations. Judging by the large number of surviving photographs, Khendamian’s pavilion was a relatively successful venture. Despite this, 'Photographie Khendamian' had a short life-span, closing down in the early 20th century. The photographer appears to have specialized only in standard studio portraiture as works in other genres have not come to light.
