Vram Hakobyan
born 1959
1980 - 2010s
Vram Hakobian was born in Yerevan. He has finished the State Polytechnic Institute and has been photographing since 1985. Currently, Hakobian works as a photographer at the National Institute of Archaeology and Ethnography in Yerevan and the National Gallery of Armenia. Alongside his documentary and commercial practice, Hakobian is also an early proponent of conceptual photography in Armenia. Influenced by the German and American schools of topographic photography, these serial works are some of the first examples of the ‘archival’ methodology in contemporary Armenian photography. The subjects are plain and mundane (old doorways for example) but Hakobyan’s photographs transform them into enigmatic objects symbolising the passage of time and history.
