The photographer’s biographical details are not known. Artashes Hakobyan was in all likelihood a photography enthusiast. He took part in photo competitions organized by Soviet-Armenian periodicals and as a result some of his winning works were published on the pages of local press. The small quantity of these images makes it difficult to judge about the overall quality and artistic trajectory of Hakobyan's work. Nevertheless, as can be discerned from a reproduction of one his photographs in the journal Garun (Spring) Hakobyan studiously developed his practice over a number of years. Though often making quite anecdotal, genre photographs according to the dominant customs of the times, Hakobyan, nevertheless, aspired for bold aesthetic solutions.
