An enthusiast of photography from an early age, Avet Esayan became a photo-correspondent of ‘Avangard’ newspaper at the age of 18. In 1963, having become a member of the Union of Journalists of Armenia and the USSR, he started actively collaborating with newspapers such as ‘Hayastani Gyughatntesutyun’ (‘Agriculture of Armenia’, 1960s), ‘Ria Taza’ (1960s) and the journal ‘Sovetakan Hayastan’ (‘Soviet Armenia’, 1967-93). Esayan has also exhibited his documentary reportages at a a number of personal exhibitions held in Yerevan and Moscow, Beirut, and Poland.
One of Esayan’s most iconic images is painter Minas Avetisyan's last photographic portrait and his photo-reportages on the daily life and culture of Armenia’s Kurdish and Yezidi communities from the 1960s (published in the ‘Ria Taza’ newspaper) are of great historical significance today.
