Andranik Khachaturi Barseghyan
1893 - 1986
1920 - 1960s
Having survived the Armenian Genocide, Barseghyan moved to Alexandrapol (Gyumri) and later took part in the 1918 defensive battle against the Turkish army in Sardarapat. According to Vahan Kochar, Barseghyan began to take photographs in Tbilisi where he moved to in 1920. He returned to Armenia twenty years later, where he continued his practice at the photo pavilion of Yerevan’s Consumer Service Syndicate until 1965.
Barseghian's studio portraits are functionally straightforward affairs, but they are also genuinely charming in their unassuming simplicity. Alongside thesecommissioned portraits, the photographer also made documentary, observational photo-sketches, in which Barseghian delved deeper into the task of representing the individual traits of his personages.
The photographer's archive was saved from complete disappearance by Vahan Kochar.
