Yura Akulyan acquired his skills at his father's Lyova Akulyan’s Etyud photo-studio between 1978-81. He received his higher-education at the  Tbilisi Polytechnic Institute. One of the more important moments of his later photographic career was a solo exhibition held in the frameworks of the One Nation - One Culture Festival organized at the Cafesjian Center for the Arts.
